The VfL Meiningen 04 eV is a football club from the southern Thuringia city of Meiningen . It has 302 members (as of 2015) and is one of five football clubs in the city. The club colors are blue and white.
history
In December 1904 the club was founded as Sportklub 04 Meiningen , which was later called "SC Meiningen 04". The soccer team from Spielverein (SpV) Meiningen joined the SC in 1912 and VfB Meiningen, founded in 1909, in 1913 . Up until the First World War, the SC, VfB and SpV played in the West Thuringia League, where SC 1904 Meiningen was first in the northern relay in 1911 and won the championship in 1913. In 1922 the SC merged with the Spielvereinigung (SV) Meiningen to form "VfL Meiningen 04". From 1923 to 1932 they were represented in the Gauliga West Thuringia. During the Second World War, the National Socialists stopped playing in 1941. By order of the Soviet occupying power, VfL was deleted from the register of associations in December 1945 . The successor was the BSG Eintracht Meiningen . There were further name changes in 1949 in BSG Ernst-Thälmann Meiningen and in 1951 in BSG Einheit Meiningen . 1952 unit Meiningen was a founding member of the district league Suhl . Until 1956, they mostly occupied midfield positions.
In 1957, unit Meiningen was united with the footballers of the BSG Lok, which also played in the district league, through the integration into the football section of the company sports community (BSG) Lokomotive Meiningen . The BSG locomotive was carried by the former Reichsbahn repair shop and today's Meiningen steam locomotive works . The soccer section continued in this form until 1992. During this time, the first team played mostly in the district league, one of the 15 third leagues in the GDR. Here the district championship title in 1960, 1983/84 and 1986/87 as well as the title cup winner could be fought. In 1971 they were promoted to the second-rate GDR league . After a very unsuccessful season in which they only won one victory in 22 games, the team was relegated again in 1972. In 1990 the name of the BSG Lokomotive was changed to ESV (Eisenbahnersportverein) Lok Meiningen and the soccer section was a founding member of the Thuringian League (third class at the time).
On May 11, 1992, VfL Meiningen 04 was finally re-established as eV and the ESV Lok Meiningen was separated . The sports field of the railway workers was renamed the sports field Landsberger Straße . The VfL teams played there until the end of the 2005/06 season, only to move to the Maßfelder Weg stadium at the start of the 2006/07 season . Occasionally the old venue was still used for training purposes and for point games in the youth field for a few years, but has since been given up. The junior teams are game communities (SG) that are formed and supported by VfL and the neighborhood neighbors SG Helba and Herpfer SV 07.
