The Jezernice Viaduct ( Jezernický viadukt in Czech ) is a railway bridge on the former Kaiser-Ferdinand-Nordbahn ( Vienna - Cracow ) in the Czech Republic . It leads across the Jezernice river south of the Jezernice village in Moravia .
history
In the course of the construction of the Kaiser-Ferdinands-Nordbahn, which follows the valley of the Betschwa on the right between Prerau and Mährisch Weißkirchen , the basin of the river Jezernice had to be overcome.
For this purpose, a brick masonry viaduct was built, which was completed in 1842. It was not until the Leipnik - Oderberg section opened in 1847 that the bridge was used for rail traffic. The double-track expansion of the railway line made it necessary to widen the viaduct, which was only designed for single-track operation. For this purpose, a second identical bridge was added from 1873, but it was made of stone.
In the course of the expansion of the railway line that began in the 1990s, it was necessary to renovate the bridge, which was classified as a technical monument. During the construction work it turned out that the load-bearing capacity and statics of the structure were insufficient. Contrary to the information in the old architectural drawings, the walls of the brick viaduct were largely not stabilized, and it turned out that the vaults of the stone bridge were only filled. This made demolition of the structure down to the pillars inevitable.
The vaults were finally renewed using reinforced concrete, and in accordance with the requirements of the monument protection authorities, they were provided with hard clinker brickwork that was largely true to the original. In 2002 the renovation and reconstruction work was completed.
Another technical monument is to the east in Slavíč with the former tunnel of the Kaiser-Ferdinand-Nordbahn, which ran under the village.
The viaduct consists of 42 arches, 35 of which have a span of 7.59 m and the remaining seven of 5.69 m. Since the completion of the construction work, the bridge has been illuminated at night.
