Victor Bivol

Victor Bivol (born July 15, 1977 in Costeşti , Rajon Ialoveni , Moldovan SSR ) is a former Moldovan judoka . He won a bronze medal at the 1997 World Championships.

Career

The 1.68 m tall Victor Bivol competed in half-light weight until 2000. In 1996 he was third in the European Junior Championships. At the 1997 World Championships in Paris he defeated the Cuban Israel Hernández , the Poland Jarosław Lewak and in the quarterfinals the Dutch Patrick van Kalken . In the semifinals he was defeated by the South Korean Kim Hyuk . Bivol won a bronze medal by defeating the Russian Magomed Jafarow. In May 1999 the European Championships took place in Bratislava. Bivol lost his opening match against the Italian Girolamo Giovinazzo . After four wins in the Hope Round, he received a bronze medal. Two months later he also won bronze at the Universiade in Palma de Mallorca. At the European Championships in 2000 in Wroclaw, Bivol took fifth place. In Sydney he was eliminated from the 2000 Olympic Games in his second fight.

After the Olympic Games in 2000, Bivol switched to lightweight, the weight class up to 73 kilograms. At the 2003 World Championships in Osaka, he reached the semi-finals with four wins. After losing to South Korean Lee Won-hee and Portuguese João Neto , he finished fifth. In the following year he defeated Neto in the quarter-finals at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, in the semifinals he lost to Lee Won-hee as in the previous year. After losing to the Brazilian Leandro Guilheiro in the battle for the bronze medal, Bivol finished in fifth place. In 2006 Bivol was seventh at the European Championships. In 2007 he finished fifth after losing to Georgian David Kevkhishvili in the round of 16, but fought his way back into the tournament with three wins in the round of hope.
