Víctor Julio Suárez Rojas alias Jorge Briceño Suárez alias Luis Suárez alias Mono Jojoy (born February 5, 1953 in Cabrera , Cundinamarca department ; † September 22, 2010 in Macarena , Meta department ) was a Colombian leader of the FARC .

Life

Briceño had been a member of the FARC since 1975. According to his own statements, he was used as a messenger in the organization as a child. Millions of dollars in bounties were exposed on his head. In addition, there were 62 Colombian arrest warrants for murder, kidnapping and terrorism . There was an extradition request from the USA for drug trafficking and the kidnapping of three Americans. At his death, he was number two in the FARC hierarchy behind Alfonso Cano and was considered the movement's military leader. The "Bloque Oriental" was directly subordinate to him. He is considered the planner of many of the organization's bloody actions and had a reputation for being a ruthless commander. The murder of the rancher president Raimundo Sojo Zambrano in 1995 and the liberal MP Diego Turbay Cote at the end of 2000 are said to have been carried out on his orders. He is also said to have been responsible for the murder of two US missionaries kidnapped in 1994.

Briceño was killed with about 20 other rebels in the course of the "Operation Sodom" carried out by the Colombian armed forces on September 21 and 22, 2010 . 78 aircraft (combat and transport aircraft and helicopters) and around 800 soldiers and police officers took part in the attack near La Julia, in the Meta Department, approx. 200 km south of Bogota. 20 computers, 50 USB sticks and four tons of food were looted. The success of the attack was made possible through betrayal by Joy’s security personnel. The Colombian secret service managed to place a GPS transmitter in the boots of the FARC commander.

His successor was Félix Muñoz .
