Victor Lesser

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Victor Richard Lesser (born before 1966) is an American computer scientist who deals with artificial intelligence , particularly with multi-agent systems .

Lesser studied mathematics at Cornell University with a bachelor's degree in 1966 and computer science at Stanford University with a master's degree and doctorate in 1973 with William F. Miller (Dynamic control structures and their use in emulation). From 1972 to 1977 he was with Raj Reddy at Carnegie Mellon University . In 1977 he became Assistant Professor, 1978 Associate Professor and 1982 Professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he became a Distinguished Professor in 2009 and retired in 2011. From 1992 until its closure in 2014, he was director of the Multi-Agent Systems Laboratory there.

In 1983 he was a visiting scientist at the MIT AI Laboratory and in 1990/91 at the Knowledge Systems Laboratory in Stanford and he was a visiting scientist at the TU Delft (visiting professor at the Dutch Academy of Sciences in 2013), the University of Technology in Sydney and the University of Southampton. He was also an analyst and programmer at Control Data in the 1960s.

He deals with complex AI systems in open environments and applications such as sensor networks for monitoring traffic and weather, understanding spoken language and other acoustic information (participation in Raj Reddy`s Hearsay project and the Blackboard method developed in the 1970s), information retrieval from the Internet, peer-to-peer information retrieval , intelligent user interfaces, systems of virtual agents and task allocation in distributed systems.

In 2009 he received the IJCAI Award for Research Excellence . He is a fellow of the AAAI and the IEEE .

His PhD students include Daniel Corkill , Edmund Durfee and Tuomas Sandholm .
