Victor Sproles

Victor "Vic" Sproles (* 18th November 1927 in Chicago , † 13. May 2005 ) was an American jazz - bassist .

Victor Sproles is a veteran of the Chicago jazz scene; he worked with Red Rodney ( Modern Music from Chicago ) in the 1950s and appeared on Sun Ra’s early albums such as Sound Sun Pleasure! , Super-Sonic Jazz or Sound of Joy . In 1957 he accompanied Stan Getz and Chet Baker in their joint session in Chicago for Verve ( Stan Meets Chet ). In 1960 Sproles was a member of Johnny Griffin's Big Soul Band , in 1961 he played in Muhal Richard Abrams ' Experimental Band . In 1964 he was briefly a member of Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers with Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller and John Gilmore ( `S Make It on Verve); around 1967 he accompanied Lee Morgan on his Blue Note albums The Rumproller and The Sixth Sense , and in 1968 the pianist Andrew Hill ( Dance with Death ). In 1974 he played in the big band of Clark Terry and worked on Buddy DeFranco's album Free Fall . In 1990 he spent two months in Japan, where he performed in a trio with Tardo Hammer and Vernel Fournier . Sproles can also be heard on recordings by Carmen McRae , Odetta , Harold Ousley and Larry Willis .
