Richard Allen "Tardo" Hammer (born February 26, 1958 in Queens , New York City ) is an American jazz musician ( piano , composition ) of post-bop and modern jazz .

Live and act

Hammer began playing the piano at the age of five and had lessons from Sal Mosca between 1965 and 1968 . At the age of 13 he returned to the piano after having occupied himself with the clarinet and guitar . In his youth he listened intensively to jazz recordings and initially taught himself to play this music. He worked in the American jazz scene from 1977. In 1980 he played with Warne Marsh , then longer with Richie Vitale . In the early 1980s he was part of the bands of Bill Hardman / Junior Cook , Lou Donaldson , Art Farmer / Clifford Jordan , but also worked with Lionel Hampton , Johnny Griffin and Charlie Rouse . In 1986 he was in the record studio for the first time with the Al Porcino big band . In 1990 he spent two months in Japan, where he performed in a trio with Victor Sproles and Vernel Fournier . He has also worked as an accompanist for vocalists such as Annie Ross , David Allyn , Abbey Lincoln , Chris Connor , Earl Coleman , Jon Hendricks and Marion Cowings .

After an album with trumpeter John Marshall ( Bopera House , 1988 with Ralph LaLama , John Webber , Tom Melito ), Hammer released his first album in 1999 under his own name ( Hammer Time , Sharp Nine Records) with standards and his own compositions, which he and Leroy Williams and Dennis Irwin had recorded. Hammer performed in well-known jazz clubs in the USA, Europe and Japan during his career; he recorded a number of trio albums, including a Tadd Dameron tribute album with John Webber and Joe Farnsworth ( Look Stop & Listen ). He can also be heard on recordings by Annie Ross, Charles Davis , Warren Vaché ( Remembers Benny Carter , 2015) and Grant Stewart . Hammer works as a music teacher at the Lucy Moses School. In the field of jazz he was involved in 53 recording sessions between 1986 and 2017.
