Jimmy Wormworth

James Edward "Jimmy" Wormworth (born August 14, 1937 in Utica , New York ) is an American jazz drummer .

Wormworth began playing the drums autodidactically after studying his parents' record collection and listening to recordings by the Art Tatum Trio with Sid Catlett . At the age of twelve he played in the All-City Grad School Band and was soon working with local musicians. At the age of twenty he moved to New York City at the invitation of Torrie Zito to work with Nelly Lutcher and The Jazz Modes (1958). In the same year he played with Lou Donaldson , Phineas Newborn (until 1959) and Mal Waldron in 1959, also with Sahib Shihab and Babs Gonzales .

He then accompanied the trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross ; in the following years he also worked with Charles Davis , Lonnie Hillyer , Charles McPherson , Barry Harris , Al Haig , JR Monterose and Dizzy Reece . In 2003 he worked with the pianist Tardo Hammer ; he was also involved in the recording of the album Let Me Sing (2005) by Annie Ross . In 2009 he toured Germany with the John Marshall NY All Star Quintet consisting of John Marshall (trumpet), Grant Stewart (tenor saxophone), Tardo Hammer (piano), John Goldsby (bass), who performed at the jazz forge in Düsseldorf, among others .
