Grant Stewart (born June 4, 1971 in Toronto ) is a Canadian jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , composition ) who plays in the hard bop tradition.

Live and act

Stewart was introduced to the music of Charlie Parker , Wardell Gray and Coleman Hawkins by his father, a high school English teacher and semi-professional guitarist . Father and son often played together; Through these early experiences and his father's encouragement, Stewart initially developed a feel for melody, style, and improvisation; he began playing the alto saxophone at the age of 10, and at 14 his first teacher, Pete Schofield, invited him to play professionally in Schofield's Big Band . At 17 he switched to the tenor saxophone and soon played with musicians such as Pat LaBarbera and Bob Mover . Stewart sees Mover as one of his most important influences alongside Sonny Rollins , John Coltrane , Don Byas and Lester Young . Since moving to New York City at the age of 19, Stewart et al. a. with Donald Byrd , Barry Harris, and Joe Lovano ; he has performed with Curtis Fuller , Jon Hendricks , Clark Terry , Etta Jones , Bill Charlap and Frank Gant . Stewart currently leads a quartet with Tardo Hammer (piano), Dezron Douglas (bass) and Phil Stewart (drums); he also plays with the Johnny O'Neal Trio and is a member of Ai Murakami's quartet .

Stewart's first recordings were made in Toronto in 1992 with Norman Marshall Villeneuve ( Jazz Message ); At the end of the same year he recorded his debut album Downtown Sounds in New York with Joe Magnarelli , Brad Mehldau , Peter Washington and Kenny Washington , which was followed by other albums under his own name, among others. a. at Criss Cross Jazz and Sharp Nine. In addition, he cultivated the cooperation u. a. with Omer Avital , Mike Melito , Spike Wilner , Ryan Kisor , Eric Alexander , John Marshall , Nicolas Rageau , Bob Sneider & Joe Locke , Ehud Asherie , John Swana , Harry Allen ’s All Star New York Saxophone Band , Bruce Harris , Giacomo Gates and Clovis Nicolas . In the field of jazz he was involved in 56 recording sessions between 1992 and 2017.

His album Live at Smalls was included in the quarterly list of the best of the German Record Critics ' Prize in 2013 .
