Spike Wilner

Michael "Spike" Wilner (* 1966 in New York City ) is an American jazz musician ( piano , composition ) and music producer .

Wilner grew up in Manhattan; his father is a hematologist , his mother a clinical social worker. His great, great, great grandfather was the rabbi and mystic Moses Sofer ; his maternal grandmother the painter Marie Wilner . As a child he received piano lessons; he was influenced by ragtime after watching a docudrama about the life of Scott Joplin . At the age of 14 he performed Joplin's " Maple Leaf Rag " at the St. Louis Ragtime Festival. He took music lessons in high school; after leaving school he studied at The New School for Social Research in the program for jazz and contemporary music under the direction of Arnie Lawrence . He had lessons with Barry Harris , Jaki Byard , Kenny Werner , Walter Davis Jr. , Kenny Barron , Mark Thompson, Harry Whitaker , Fred Hersch , Johnny O'Neal and Terry Waldo ; he also had the opportunity to play with Ornette Coleman . In 2007 he obtained a Masters in Piano Performance from the State University of New York in Purchase .

During his studies Wilner began to play in various bands in New York City and appeared in jazz clubs such as The Village Gate , The Angry Squire, Visiones, Augies, The West End Gate and The Village Corner, since 1994 regularly in the Smalls in Greenwich Village , to which he is now also connected as managing director and co-owner. He also toured with the Artie Shaw Big Band, the Glenn Miller Orchestra ( Ghost Bands ) and Maynard Ferguson . Wilner released a number of albums under his own name such as A Blues of Many Colors ( Fresh Sound New Talent ), Planet Jazz (Sharp Nine) and Three to Go (PosiTone). He has also published transcriptions of the music by Willie The Lion Smith ( The Lion of the Piano ). Since 2010 he has also been the producer of the club's own label SmallsLIVE , which has recorded live performances, including his own production Spike Wilner, Solo Piano: Live at Smalls . In the field of jazz he was involved in 20 recording sessions between 1998 and 2016, including a. with Dave Liebman & The Manhattan School of Music Jazz Orchestra and with Cyrille Aimée .
