Montréal Victorias (1881-1937)

The Victoria Stadium (officially Victoria Skating Rink ) was an ice rink in the Canadian Montreal in the Province of Quebec and was opened on 24 December 1862nd In the winter months, public ice skating , ice hockey and other ice sports took place, while the stadium was used for music events and exhibitions in the summer months. On March 3, 1875, the first ice hockey game ever held in a hall took place in this stadium . In addition, the first took place here in 1894 Playoff Finals to the Stanley Cup instead. It was also the first electrified building in Canada.

The building was located in Downtown Montreal on Drummond Street, south of Sainte Catherine Street, bordering Stanley Street to the east. This is just a stone's throw from the Bell Center , which is now the home of the Montréal Canadiens . The Victoria Skating Rink was closed in 1937 and in its place there is now a parking garage.

The area was acquired by the Victoria Skating Club on June 9th, 1862 and construction of the artificial ice rink began , which opened on December 24th of the same year after completion. Although it was one of the first and largest indoor ice rinks in North America , it was the second in the city on the St. Lawrence River after it opened in 1859 . The first of many ice rinks to be opened in Canada under the name of Queen Victoria quickly became a major attraction in the city.

James Creighton organized the first indoor ice hockey game on March 3, 1875 . This was played between two teams of nine, consisting of club members and students from nearby McGill University . In 1881 the Victoria Hockey Club found its sporting home in the Victoria Stadium. In 1886, the inaugural meeting of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada , Canada's second organized ice hockey league, took place in the stadium . On March 17, 1881, the first playoff final in Stanley Cup history between the Montreal Hockey Club and the Montréal Victorias took place in the stadium, which won 3-2 in favor of the Montreal Hockey Club - the later Stanley Cup winner - ran out of. On February 18, 1896, the Canadian amateur figure skating championship took place here as another major event.

After the glamorous years of the skating rink were over, it was closed in 1937 and converted into a parking garage. This building is still used today as a garage by the rental company National Car Rental .

Victoria Cup

The Victoria Cup , which will be held by the IIHF from the 2008/09 season , was named after the Victoria Skating Rink , which the IIHF regards as the birthplace of ice hockey. The first event coincides with the 100th birthday of the IIHF.
