The Victoriapark (also Viktoriapark ) in Kronberg im Taunus is a park between the districts of Kronberg and Schönberg. The park itself and several individual monuments in and around the park are under monument protection . It is named after the Emperor's widow Victoria .

history

The park was originally built around 1900 as the setting for the Kaiser Friedrich III monument. created. The city of Kronberg (19.5 acres ) and Empress Friedrich (5.25 acres) provided the land required for this. The name of the park was accordingly Kaiser-Friedrich-Denkmal-Park. After the Second World War , the park was renamed Stadtpark.

The initiative for the establishment of the park came from Empress Friedrich. A monument committee chaired by Grand Duke Friedrich of Baden planned the facility in the style of an English landscape park . An extensive network of paths was laid out and a large number of rare trees (a donation from Empress Friedrich) were planted.

In 2001 the park was renamed Victoria Park on the 100th anniversary of the death of Victoria Kaiserin Friedrich.

The park is located on sloping terrain, below the grounds of Schloss Friedrichshof . The Winkelbach, a right tributary of the Westerbach , flows through it. This is dammed in the park in three ponds. The monument pond is located directly below the Kaiser Friedrich monument . At the bottom of the park there is the Bleichweiher and below it the Schillerweiher . The Schillerweiher is decorated with fountains.

There is a large playground in the upper area of ​​the park. Not far from the Kaiser Friedrich monument, a mini golf course and tennis courts complement the leisure activities. The Pfingst-Börnchen is a contained spring near the Hainstraße.

Next to the Schillerweiher is the Anton Burger monument. It is reminiscent ofAnton Burger, the co-founder of theKronberg painter colony. The memorial was built on the initiative of the President of the "Association of Art Friends in the Countries on the Rhine",Paul Rödinger,with donations from the citizens. It consists of a round fountain basin that is flanked on the right and left by deer. These deer were melted down in 1942 and recreated in 1987 by Ilona and Karl Barth. The actual monument stands in the background. There is a three-dimensional portrait of the artist in bronze on a stele. It was created by the sculptorCarl Ludwig Sand in1908. The monument is a listed monument as an individual monument.

More monuments

Not far from the monument pond is the Guaita bowl on an open meadow . The monumental bowl is a gift from Max von Guaita . On the edge of this meadow, the memorial stone gymnast Jahn reminds of gymnast Jahn , the founder of the gymnastics movement. A few hundred meters further in the direction of the playground is the Völkerschlacht memorial stone , which commemorates the Battle of Nations near Leipzig as the turning point of the Wars of Liberation .

In 2013, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Kronberg Academy, the bronze sculpture Hommage a Pablo Casals was installed above the Schiller Pond . The bronze sculpture by the artist Walter Schembs is reminiscent of the Spanish cellist Pablo Casals .

Neighboring villas

On the edge of the park there are three listed villas at Goethestrasse 37, Goethestrasse 39 ( Villa Andreae ) and Goethestrasse 43 ( Villa Hochstrasser ). There are also listed houses on Hainstrasse, which forms the upper boundary of the park: Hainstrasse 18 ( Villa Schrödl ), Hainstrasse 21 ( Villa Dettweiler ) and Hainstrasse 23d (outbuilding of the former Villa Leinhass ).
