The Multiform carbon Berry ( Hypoxylon multiforme ) is a common fungal art from the family of the wooden club relatives (Xylariaceae).

features

The fruiting bodies (stromata) are round or oblong in outline. Often times, some of them grow together and form irregular crusts. These can be up to five millimeters thick. They are initially dark red-brown, later black. The surface is bumpy due to the underlying perithecia , they protrude somewhat. The inside (endostoma) is black.

The spore powder is colored black. The spores themselves are tinted dark olive brown, elliptical-bean-shaped and smooth. They have a fissure and one or two lighter drops of oil. The spores measure 8.5 to 10.5 by 3.5 to 5 micrometers. The asci are cylindrical, petiolate, and up to about 200 micrometers long.

Species delimitation

The relatively large, hard, black crusts are characteristic of the diverse coal berries. The huddled coal berry ( Hypoxylon cohaerens ) forms flatter stroma, the upper boundary of which is usually flatter. Representatives of the genus Nemania are also significantly flatter. The fire crust fungus ( Kretzschmaria deusta ), whose fruiting bodies can usually be broken with a little pressure , is also similar .

ecology

The multifaceted coal berry can be found all year round on dead hardwood that still has its bark. Birch trees ( Betula ) are preferred . In addition, bird cherry ( Prunus padus ) and alder ( Alnus ), rarely other woods, serve as a substrate.
