viennacontemporary

viennacontemporary is an international fair for contemporary art in Vienna . It has taken place every year since 2015 in the fourth week of September in Vienna's Marx Hall in St. Marx , part of Vienna's 3rd district. In addition to its focus on Central and Eastern Europe , viennacontemporary presents both international and Austrian galleries that focus on young and established positions in contemporary art.

In cooperation with museums and art institutions from Austria, a comprehensive supporting program is taking place, which is intended to promote Vienna's importance as a location for contemporary art and culture.

Around 100 galleries take part in viennacontemporary every year, and around 30,000 guests visit the fair.

In 2012, the chairman of the board, Dmitry Yu, organized. Aksenov, managing director Renger van den Heuvel, the two artistic directors Christina Steinbrecher-Pfandt and Vita Zaman together with their team Viennafair , a fair for contemporary art in Vienna. In 2014 Vita Zaman left the team. In 2015 the fair was renamed viennacontemporary and chose the Marx Halle as the new venue. Christina Steinbrecher-Pfandt held the position of artistic director from 2015 to 2018. In January 2019 Johanna Chromik was appointed as the new artistic director.

Marx hall

The Marx Halle is a former industrial building that is used for events and trade fairs. It is located in the center of the Neu Marx creative quarter in the 3rd district of Vienna , in which around one hundred companies from the media, creative and research sectors are located. The hall was designed by the architect Rudolf Frey at the end of the 19th century and is the first wrought iron structure in Vienna. The building is 175 m long and 20,000 m² in size and served as the cattle hall of the Vienna Central Cattle Market as the main hub for the Viennese cattle trade. It is under monument protection ( list entry ).
