A Viertele is a quarter liter of wine (0.25 liters ) in the south of the German-speaking area .

The quarter was a historical measure. In Württemberg, whether it was a duchy or a kingdom , it had been a measure since 1567 and also from 1806.

  • 1 quarter = 0.173 liters
  • 4 quarters = 1 corner = 0.69 liters

In Swabian , the enjoyment of a quarter is called “Viertelesschlotzen” and the Swabians sometimes jokingly as “Viertelesschlotzer”.

Federal President Theodor Heuss addressed the Viertele as part of the Swabian way of life in his inaugural speech in the state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern on June 5, 1950: “[...] the 'Viertele' basically has nothing to do with alcohol [...] that Viertele represents a symbol for belonging. "
