Vikram Batra

Vikram Batra (born September 9, 1974 in Palampur in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh , † July 7, 1999 ) was an officer in the Indian army .

Early life and education

Batra attended the Palampur Public School up to intermediate level. He attended upper secondary school at the Central School in Palampur. In 1990 he and his twin brother represented their school at the Indian table tennis championships. He later attended DAV College in Chandigarh for a bachelor's degree in health science. In college, he joined the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Aviation Division during his freshman year. He qualified further in the Cadet Corps and then opted for a career in the armed forces. In 1995 he completed his studies.

Military career

Batra entered the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun in June 1996. After completing his 19-month training course, he was transferred to the 13th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (13 JAK RIF) as a lieutenant . The 13th JAK RIF was deployed to fight insurgency in Kashmir under the 192 Mountain Brigade of the 8 Mountain Division. When the Kargil War broke out on June 5, 1999, the battalion was again sent to Jammu and Kashmir . He began his service as a lieutenant during this war and rose to the rank of captain . He managed to reach some important heights with his unit, which also led to direct combat operations with the Pakistani units. He died on one of the missions.

Vikram Batra was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra , India's highest military honor, on August 15, 1999, the 52nd anniversary of India's independence . His father GL Batra accepted the medal for his deceased son from the Indian President KR Narayanan .

heritage

Several places in India were named after Vikram Batra. Conquering point 4875 resulted in the mountain being named Batra Top in his honor . A hall in the Service Selection Center Allahabad is called "Vikram Batra Block", a residential area in the Jabalpur Cantonment is called "Captain Vikram Batra Enclave".

A memorial to war veterans, including Batra, stands in his alma mater DAV College in Chandigarh. In 2003 , Abhishek Bachchan played the role of Captain Vikram Batra in a JP Dutta film based on the Kargil incident .
