Viktor Jacobi (born October 22, 1883 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary , † December 12, 1921 in New York , NY ) was a Hungarian operetta composer .

Life

Viktor Jacobi studied from 1903 to 1905 at the Franz Liszt Music Academy with Hans (János) Koessler , together with Albert Szirmai and Leó Weiner . While still a student, his first operetta, A rátartós királykisasszony (The Haughty Princess) , was premiered in 1904 under the name Viktor Jakabfi. In 1902 he wrote the textbook for an early stage work by Emmerich Kálmán . After that, a new operetta appeared almost every year until 1914. His favorite lyricist was Ferenc Martos .

His best known operettas are Leányvásár (Marriage Market) (1911) and Sybill (1914). These successes also made him known internationally. In 1914 he traveled to London and emigrated to the USA because of the outbreak of the First World War. There he composed the operetta Apple Blossoms together with Fritz Kreisler .

He is one of the most important Hungarian operetta composers. His most successful works are still popular today, especially in Hungary.
