The Viktoriabrücke is a road bridge in Bonn , which crosses the left Rhine route as well as light rail tracks and thus connects the northern part of the city at one end with the western and southern part of the city .

Location and importance of traffic

North driveway

The Viktoriabrücke is located west of the main train station . It connects the two crossings Hochstadenring / Bornheimer Straße (in the north) and Wittelsbacherring / Endenicher Straße (in the south). In total, it crosses five tracks on the Rhine route and two of the light rail ( Rheinuferbahn and Vorgebirgsbahn ) as well as Thomastrasse .

The bridge is an important north-south connection in the Bonn city area. It is well connected to the motorway via large roads, which makes it more attractive for through traffic than the smaller underpasses in the city center and Am Propsthof , but also still close to the center so that it is also used for short distances. In 2006, around 34,000 cars drove over the bridge every day.

Rust Damage (2006)

On April 15, 1905, the first non-level crossing (Viktoriabrücke) over the busy Cologne – Koblenz railway in the Bonn city area was opened to traffic.

Between 1911 and 1914 August Macke , who was living on Bornheimer Strasse at the time (see August-Macke-Haus ), painted 22 works of the Viktoriabrücke. Between 1915 and 1936, tram line 3 ran from Gronau to Beethovenplatz over the Viktoriabrücke. Between Christmas and New Year's Eve 1944, the original Victoria Bridge was badly damaged by Allied bombers, after the war it was dismantled and replaced by the current structure, which was opened to traffic on December 22, 1949. In 1963 the bridge was widened by 6.5 meters on the western side. In August 2001, the traffic management on the Viktoriabrücke was changed by the closure of a straight lane.

On October 16, 2006, it became known that the main structural inspection according to DIN 1076 - to a considerable extent, structural-related damage - found damage to the structure of the bridge. For the repair of the damage and the simultaneous rehabilitation of the roadways and sidewalks, 1.45 million euros were calculated; the work was originally supposed to start in 2007 and take a year and a half. According to more recent plans, however, they were initially postponed until the completion of the widening and renovation measures on the Kennedy Bridge , which was then planned for April 2010. They should last two years and cost around 4.5 million euros. As a result of the additional damage discovered during a special investigation, the Viktoriabrücke has been closed to trucks over 16 tons since May 14, 2010 until the end of the renovation work.

In March 2011, it became known that, because of the major damage to the bridge, a complete renovation and a partial new construction was necessary instead of renovation. In addition, a new connection ramp to the distribution circle and a new roundabout at the old cemetery were to be built. For this purpose, the construction work had to be re-tendered. The roundabout was opened to traffic at the beginning of September 2016 after a two-month construction period and was completed by the beginning of 2017.

Renewal was initially due to begin after work on the millipede was finished (which it did in September 2013); Ultimately, construction began at the beginning of June 2016. After various complications, total costs of around 45 million euros and a construction period of at least 2021/22 are expected (as of May 2019). The increase in costs was criticized by the taxpayers' association in its 2019/20 Black Book. The first bridge girders for the new bridge were installed in October and November 2019. The newly built eastern half of the bridge was opened to traffic on June 29, 2020.

construction

Lane

The Viktoriabrücke was a steel girder bridge. It consisted of three fields and had ten steel girders each one meter high. It was 18.68 meters wide and 94.50 meters long, but was not straight, but curved to the side. Most recently, the bridge was divided into three lanes (two main lanes and a right-turn lane at each end), two narrow cycle paths at road level and two wide, raised pedestrian paths at the edges. The bridge is currently being demolished and rebuilt in the same place.
