Vila Nova da Baronia is a place and a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Baixo Alentejo in Portugal . The municipality is located in the district of Alvito , with an area of 128.3 km² and 1245 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). This corresponds to a population density of 9.7 inh / km². The agriculture with cork oaks, olive trees and wheat fields as well as cattle breeding is the main source of income in the place and the surrounding area.
history
The first settlement of the area goes back to the time of the Celts and later the Romans . There is still a Roman bridge 300 meters from the town center. The main church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção is under construction on the 13th-14th centuries. Century back. Inside there are particularly ornate frescoes. The chapel of Sant 'Águeda is also known for its particularly artistic furnishings. The place was also called Vila Nova de Alvito before the 18th century and belonged to the sphere of influence of Baron Conde de Alvito. That is why Vila Nova da Baronia was the district town of the area around Alvito from 1280 to 1836.
