The Villa Garnier is located on Via Garnier in Bordighera on the Ligurian Riviera in Italy . The building is part of the property protected by the Superintendent of Architecture and Landscape of Liguria .

history

After living in Menton for a while, the architect Charles Garnier decided to build a villa in Bordighera. In May 1871 he found a piece of land near the Arziglia. This place was already occupied by a small chapel that was used as an elementary school for boys. It was a sloping plot of land outside the city that stretched to the sea and encompassed the fishing beach, the famous Arziglia . In order to preserve the land, Garnier offered the community a substantial sum in addition to building a new school. Given this exceptional offer, the city met the conditions and Garnier was able to buy the land.

The elegant villa later became a model for the architecture of the Ligure Riviera and the Côte d'Azur (French Riviera).

In Bordighera, Garnier had many well-known guests such as Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier and Gustave Boulanger . Caricatures of these artists can still be admired on the walls of the entrance. In the villa there are still some paintings by Jules Eugène Lenepveu , Alexandre Bida and Georges Clairin , which were part of the Garnier collection.

Since 1954 the villa has been a religious house of the Congregation of the Joseph Sisters of Aosta.

The gardens

The gardens were created by Garnier with the help of his son Christian and Ludovic Winter . The villa is surrounded by a magnificent palm grove and sun-drenched terraces on which exotic plants have also been grown. There are around 600 different varieties in total; local species such as olive trees, palms, fig trees and lemon trees predominate.

Today there are ten different species of palm and several hundred-year-old trees in the 2,500 square meter garden, including a Nolina longifolia .

In the garden there is also a bust of Charles Garnier by the French sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux and a column from the Palais des Tuileries in Paris.
