On the Contrescarpe between Kohlhökerstraße and Hohenpfad lived an upper-class upper class who had houses built in very different shapes in the 19th century after the fortifications had been converted into a rampart and the street expanded in 1802 . When this area became part of the city of Bremen with full civil rights in 1849, construction activity increased.

The three-story house with red stone facade parts and a mansard roof-like upper floor was built for the merchant Johann Smidt in the style of historicism . The building combines many, sometimes playful, elements such as the portal with two columns, a pointed turret, the octagonal bay window and other bay windows.

Today (2018) the house u. a. Headquarters of a shipping company founded in 1993.
