The Trabzon Museum , Turkish Trabzon Müzesi , also Kostaki Konağı ("Kostaki Residence"), is a house in Trabzon , Turkey , which is now used as an archaeological and ethnographic museum.

history

The house was built in the early 1900s as the private residence of Kostaki Teophylaktos , a banker of Greek descent. The architect was of Italian origin and many of the materials used to construct the building came from Italy. His name is unknown.

When Teophylactos, who had been Trabzon's mayor since 1916, went bankrupt in 1917, the Ottoman state confiscated his property, including the villa. The building was handed over to the Nemlioğlu family.

During the Turkish War of Liberation 1919–1923, Villa Kostaki was used as the military headquarters in the region. In 1924 it was rebuilt for the first visit of the Turkish state founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in Trebizond. Mustafa Kemal and his wife Latife stayed in the villa between September 15 and 17 . In 1927 the building was nationalized by Governor of Trebizond Ali Galip Bey and served as the governor's house until 1931. Between 1931 and 1937 it was used as the inspector's office. Villa Kostaki was taken over by the Ministry of Education in 1937 and from then on it was used as a vocational high school for girls for 50 years. Finally, in 1987, the building was handed over to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to be converted into a museum.
