Villa Maund is a villa in Schoppernau , Hopfreben in Vorarlberg , which Sir John Oakley Maund († June 10, 1902) had built in the early 1890s.

The German Crown Prince Wilhelm from the House of Hohenzollern used the villa as a hunting lodge from 1908. The current owner rents out the building for events.

history

The Villa Maund was built as a hunting villa by the English banker and alpinist Sir John Oakley Maund on the foothills of the Ünschenberg Alp .
After his murder in 1902 - he was beaten to death in a back alley with a sandbag - it passed into the possession of his daughter Zoe Désirée Maund , who , against the wishes of her mother Zoe Gertraud Maund , passed the entire property to the Englishman Martin on November 17, 1931 Holt sold for £ 750  . Many hunting parties used the villa, including the German Crown Prince Wilhelm, who was the first to travel to the Bregenzerwald in a motorized vehicle in 1908. From 1995 to 2007 the Vorarlberg artist and actionist Paul Renner lived in the Villa Maund. His guests included u. a. Ferran Adrià , Günter Brus , Franzobel , Zaha Hadid , Heinz D. Heisl , Daniel Spoerri and Eckart Witzigmann .

Building history

The architect was the Englishman William Morris . He was a British painter, architect, poet, craftsman, engineer and printer. Before 1888, he built two houses in the British-Scottish cottage style in Weggis on Lake Lucerne , Switzerland, for John Oakley Maund, which looked similar to those in hops . His sample books (plans, views, etc.) can still be seen in the Kunsthaus Zürich today.

The master carpenter Johann Anton Strolz from Schröcken was responsible for the builder . Also significantly involved in the construction was Pius Bischof , ship owner in Au , master carpenter and carpenter. The topping-out ceremony (topping) was the villa in the English country style, 1895. 1892, completed the interior design of the villa dates back entirely by Bregenzerwälder craftsmen.

The widow Zoe Gertraud Maund had a small power plant with a reservoir built in 1923 , the generator of which supplied the direct current for the villa for 47 years .

hunt

There is evidence that bears and ibexes existed in the Bregenz Forest until the 14th century . The original Maund hunting ground comprised the Schoppernau, Hopfreben and Schröcken area. 25 chamois were allowed to be shot in the whole area  . Goats were completely spared. Today the former area is divided into many different sizes.

Hunting parties

After the first hunting party in 1895 (Alexander Kennedy, James Fairholm, B. Montgommery, Zoe Gertraud Maund and Lady Carolina Hamilton), Crown Princess Cecilie from Mecklenburg and her husband Crown Prince Wilhelm regularly leased the Maund hunting villa from 1908 until the end of World War II.

During Cecilie's stay in 1943, she confided in chief hunter Theodor Hammerle that she had “a lot of jewelry with her, which should be hidden here” . According to Hammerle, who gave a detailed description of the type of hiding place (concrete shaft, protection against theft, fire and moisture) and also the secret return transport of the treasure over territories of occupied Austria in 1946, it is said to be parts of the "Crown Treasure of the Hohenzollern ” .
