The Medici Villa La Topaia is located on the hills near Castello, on the outskirts of Florence, not far from the municipal border with Sesto Fiorentino . In the immediate vicinity are the Villa Medici von Castello and the Villa Medici La Petraia . La Topaia was a kind of hunting lodge that Cosimo I de 'Medici had built before 1550 on the basis of an older building.

The Grand Duke left it to Scipione Ammirato and Benedetto Varchi , who wrote their Storie fiorentine there . Grand Duke Cosimo III. de 'Medici had the building rebuilt and surrounded by a kind of botanical garden. Above all, he grew citrus fruits and various types of wine - inside the house he had them faithfully reproduced by the painter Bartolomeo Bimbi .

After the unification of Italy, the property like that of the other previously ruling houses fell to the House of Savoy . Victor Emmanuel III , left it to the Italian state in 1919, which passed it on to the veterans' association Opera nazionale combattenti, which sold it to private customers.

The villa is privately owned and not open to the public.
