Scipione Ammirato (born October 7, 1531 in Lecce , † January 11, 1601 in Florence ) was an Italian historian .

Life

Scipione Ammirato came from a patrician family from Lecce in the Kingdom of Naples , which originally came from Tuscany . His father chose him for the career of a lawyer, but his literary interests, which he pursued during his stay in Naples from 1547 to 1551, dissuaded him. He entered the service of the Church and resided for some time in Venice , later he entered the service of Pope Pius IV. In 1569 he went to Florence, where Duke Cosimo I became his patron. He let him live in the Medici Palace on the condition that he write a history of Florence . This Istorie Fiorentine is the work that made him famous. During his lifetime, however, only a first part was published in 1560, which contains the history of Florence up to 1434. The remaining 15 books were published in 1641 by Ammirato's adoptive son, who also got a new edition of the first part with his own additions (1647). In 1595 he became canon of the Florentine Cathedral , after having completed his doctorate in theology at the age of almost 65. Other works by Scipione Ammirato are commentaries on Tacitus , in which he led the political discussion of Machiavelli's ideas , and genealogies of the families of Florence and Naples.
