Floor plan of the Villa Rümelin

The Villa Rümelin was a villa at Lerchenstrasse 74 in Heilbronn . The villa was considered an example of the architecture of Hermann Muthesius , the main representative of the country house style popular in Germany around 1900 . The building was demolished in 1970.

description

The villa was designed personally by Hermann Muthesius in 1913 for the Heilbronn banking family Rümelin and built by Adolf Braunwald as site manager. The two-story building on a high concrete base with a high mansard gable roof was built on an L-shaped floor plan. The side facing the street was formed by a tail gable made of sandstone with volutes and a portico . The portico consisted of six Ionic columns that carried an architrave with a viewing terrace above. A second tail gable made of sandstone with volutes had been built to the northwest, to which a portico with six columns, this time semicircular, had been placed. Towards the garden a tail gable could be seen again, to which a polygonal stand bay extending over two stories was in front. Above the bay was a balcony.

The hall had been fitted out with pine paneling that was stained brownish gray. There was also a large green fireplace there. This was designed with ceramics from the grand ducal workshops in Karlsruhe. Upholstered benches made the fireplace niche a comfortable place to stay in the hall. Another assembly point was in the bay window that faced the rose terrace. The reception room had been specially furnished. There was a large painting there that had been placed above the fireplace. The walls of the reception room were clad in gray floral silk, which in turn was framed in cherry wood. The other walls and ceiling were also provided with cherry wood paneling.

history

In the post-war period, the well-preserved building was used for various purposes. For example, on September 3, 1950, an exhibition “Contemporary interior furnishings” organized by Gerda Schroedter took place. The Amerikahaus organized a piano recital on May 18, 1951 with the American pianist Harold Heiberg and on May 31, 1951 a recital with the colored singer Marguerite Wood. This was accompanied by Franz Hallsch on the piano. On June 5, 1951, a concert with Maria Stoesser, a Californian pianist, took place under the direction of the Amerikahaus. On July 24, 1951, the Amerikahaus organized a piano concert in the villa with the pianist George Hadjinikos. In addition, an exhibition of abstract compositions by Fritz Kolb took place there. On August 6, 1951, the America House held a concert in the villa with the pianist Noël Lee.

There was also an exhibition of watercolors by Albert Volk . On August 27, 1951, a concert with the Hungarian violinist Dénes Zsigmondy and the pianist Anneliese Nissen was held there under the direction of the Amerikahaus . On September 24, 1951, there was a recital of the America House with the soprano Patricia Konnor. On November 1, 1951, two short operas, Das Telefon by Gian Carlo Menotti and La serva patrona by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi , were performed in the villa . December 1954 the villa is used for a Christmas exhibition by the architect Gerda Schröedter from Talheim.

The villa at Lerchenstrasse 74 was demolished in 1970/74. The property was later named Alexanderstraße 44.

On October 19, 1974, Dr. Werner Heim presented a list of 60 Art Nouveau buildings in Heilbronn. The occasion was the demolition of the two "important Art Nouveau buildings" Villa Rümelin (Alexanderstr. 44) and Pfleiderer (Lerchenstr. 69). He intended to give this list to the building authorities. The aim should be to inform the historical museum before the buildings are demolished.

On December 7th 1974, the master stonemason and sculptor Franz Hamerla showed his exhibition "Art Nouveau Houses in Heilbronn". In addition to the Stadttheater and Villa Pfleiderer, this also included Villa Rümelin. Dr. Robert Koch, who had taken 30 photographs, intends to compile a catalog of the buildings, most of which have already been demolished.
