The Industrie Center Obernburg (ICO) is an industrial park on the edge of the Rhine-Main area , around 50 km southeast of Frankfurt am Main and around 20 km south of Aschaffenburg. It is located on the eastern bank of the Main opposite the city of Obernburg am Main . The area covers 175 hectares with 65 buildings, which are located in the districts of Markt Elsenfeld and the city of Erlenbach am Main . More than 150,000 m² of expansion space can already be used for new settlements. Further industrial areas of around 40 hectares are also to be developed for industrial use as the Erlenbach industrial park.

The Industrie Center Obernburg has a trimodal transport connection ( waterway , rail, road) and is easily accessible via the expressway ( B 469 ), which has been developed like a motorway . A separate train station with a stop (Glanzstoffwerke) and an industrial track connect the location with the rail network. A landing stage on the Main links the location with the economic centers on the trans-European water transport network as well as with the north-western European ports in the Rhine-Maas Delta (the ARA ports ) and the Black Sea .

The on-site power plant operated by Kraftwerk Obernburg GmbH ensures that all types of energy are generated for the companies based on the site. A gas turbine operated according to the principle of combined heat and power has been feeding the electricity generated into the public grid since 1996 and supplying the Miltenberg district with environmentally friendly electrical energy. The connection to the distribution network takes place at the 20 kV medium voltage level in the E.ON Bayern electricity network. The local companies use the resulting heat in the form of steam to operate their production facilities.

The large chimney of the power plant is 186 meters high.

history

The location was founded in 1924 as a production facility for textile viscose yarns of the Vereinigte Glanzstoff-Fabriken AG . It was also founded because the then structurally weak surrounding area was predominantly rural or characterized by home tailoring and suffered from high unemployment in the years after the First World War . The municipalities in the surrounding area, from which around 50% of the workforce originate to this day, experienced a sustainable upgrade and strong personnel and infrastructural growth through the industrial complex. After the production of textile viscose had been established, the manufacture of technical viscose yarns began in 1938, which is mainly used as a reinforcement material in the carcass of car tires.

In the 1950s, fiber production was expanded to include synthetic yarns such as polyester and polyamide . Since the 1970s and 1980s, the location has increasingly developed into the most important production facility for high-quality yarns for technical applications in Europe due to the expansion of production capacities. For many decades, the location, where a corporate research institute with approx. 300 employees and an in-house engineering office with approx. 50 employees had existed since 1945, was the largest employer in the Bavarian Lower Main region. The highest number of employees with almost 7,000 was reached in the mid-1970s. As a result, the ICO is of central importance for the structural and economic development of the local communities and the entire area to this day.

In its 95-year history, the location also changed its name several times when the parent company changed its name from Glanzstoff to Enka, Akzo Nobel and Acordis , until the new name Industrie Center Obernburg was chosen in 2003. The background to the last change was the split up of the previous business areas of the Acordis Group and their separate sale. At the same time, the operating company Mainsite Services was founded, in which all technical, analytical and administrative areas of the site are combined. The former group branches located in the ICO were converted into legally independent GmbHs with the aim of a stronger focus on the respective market segments. The former corporate research institute was closed in 2000 and the engineering office was integrated into the operating company Mainsite. In 2010 the engineering office and the workshops were merged as a subsidiary of Mainsite under the name Mainsite Technologies GmbH. As part of the operating company's focus on its location services, Mainsite Technologies GmbH was sold to the Munich-based private equity company Callista Private Equity in November 2018 and renamed MainTech Systems GmbH.

The location is still a household name among the population of the surrounding area under the names "Glanzstoff", "Akzo" or "Acordis".

The more than 35 companies in the Industrie Center Obernburg together employ around 3,000 people (May 2018). In addition to the 15 companies that emerged from the previous group structure, other companies from the medical technology, plastics technology, paints and varnishes, reaction technology, logistics, chemistry and industrial services sectors have settled in the ICO since 2003 and use it as a platform for the operation of their companies.

Research and Development

Since 2010 there has been a "center for scientific services" on the premises of the former corporate research institute on the ICO site, supported by funding from the Free State of Bavaria and the district of Miltenberg, municipalities and regional companies (free use of rooms, grants for operating costs, etc.) und Transfer " , or ZeWiS for short, from Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences . It deals with application-oriented research in the fields of materials, automotive, intelligent systems and automation, energy efficiency, information technology and information systems, and design-oriented research.

From 2011 to 2014, as part of ZeWiS, under the name " mainproject " there was a project funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) to transfer knowledge and harness the innovation potential of Aschaffenburg University for small and medium-sized companies in the region. The ICO location operator Mainsite GmbH & Co.KG is involved in mainproject as a partner from industry.

A new edition of the project called " mainproject 2018 " ran until May 2018 , also funded by the European Social Fund. The topics dealt with in the project phase included: information and communication technologies, localization and communication solutions, Industry 4.0, efficient production technologies, process innovation, automation, material cycles and resource strategy, innovative aspects of corporate management, in particular IT-supported and knowledge-intensive processes and services.

A project called " mainproject digital " has been running since June 2018, again funded by the European Social Fund
