Villa Rustica (Oberentfelden)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Villa Rustica von Oberentfelden is the remains of a Roman estate near Oberentfelden in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland .

Roman remains have probably come to light on site for a long time, as local field names such as wall fields indicate. The first excavations took place in 1915. Further systematic excavations followed in 1936–1938, 1951 and 1958.

The entire estate took up an area of about 480 × 160 meters and was oriented east-west on the edge of a slope. This area was walled, with a gate on the west side and the mansion at the other end, on the east side. Various commercial buildings stood along the two longitudinal walls. About 100 meters to the west, in front of the manor house, there was a monumental fountain with a peristyle . The actual mansion was about 55 × 17/30 meters. At the back it had a portico , at the front a terrace and perhaps another portico, which could not be proven with certainty. Most of the rooms in the house were clad in Jurassic marble. In a bath wing there were rooms with hypocausts . Another bath was built south of the mansion in the second century. Remnants of Jurassic marble and wall paintings were found here. The villa was founded in the first century AD and was in use until the fourth century.
