The remains of the villa

The Villa Rustica von Oberlunkhofen is the remains of a Roman estate in Schalchmatthau near Oberlunkhofen in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland .

The remains had been known for a long time and interpreted as the ruins of a castle. Systematic excavations took place from 1897 to 1900. 1979 to 1981 the bath wing was preserved. The previously known remains of the complex consist of the manor house and two outbuildings. The manor house stands on a terrace with a view of the Reuss Valley and the Alps . The manor house had a portico with two corner projections in the south . In a later construction phase, a bathroom was installed in the eastern part of the house. Seven rooms had simple white-ground wall paintings. Coins and ceramics indicate that the villa was inhabited from around AD 50 to 250. The most important small find is the torso of a statue of Bacchus .
