Villa Rustica (Yarchester)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Villa Rustica in Yarchester is a former Roman estate ( Villa rustica ) at Yarchester in the municipality Harley , County of Shropshire , in the West Midlands region in England .

In antiquity, the villa was located about ten kilometers south-east of the Roman city of Viroconium (today's Wroxeter ) in the Roman province of Britannia ( Britain ). The villa was on a small hill with a stream running along it to the east and west.

The remains of the villa were excavated from 1956 to 1958. Since the villa has only been partially excavated, it is difficult to get an idea of its former appearance. In the south six rooms have been completely excavated, one of them had an apse with a mosaic stylistically dated to the 4th century AD. It mainly shows geometric patterns. These rooms seem to belong to the southern part of a villa with an inner courtyard. On the west side there was perhaps once a colonnade and two corner projections . The pottery found dates to the third and fourth centuries. The only coin found belongs to Constantius II (337 to 361 AD).
