History and description

The representative, voluminous two-storey, strongly structured villa with a tower in front was built in 1896 (according to other information: 1895). Stylistically, the building , built in the country house style , is part of historicism . The builder was the Darmstadt businessman Rudolf Vollrath (also Rudolph Vollrath). The building initially served as a vegetarian dining house and hotel (“vegetarian restaurant” with 13 guest rooms). The villa is one of the first buildings in the Trautheim settlement. In the period from 1900 to 1945 the opportunity was given here to realize experimental forms of living and living. Well-off citizens - mostly from neighboring Darmstadt - built summer houses in the Trautheim settlement. These summer houses were later converted into residential houses. At the end of the 19th century, Vollrath acquired an area of around 10,000 square meters. The “Villa Irene”, a residential building with a coach house , was initially built on this site . Four years later the "Villa Trautheim" was built. The villa was named after the unusual first name of Vollrath's second oldest son. The "Villa Trautheim" became the namesake of the Trautheim settlement and its distinctive landmark. Around 1900 the "Neue Chaussee" ( Bundesstrasse 449 ) was built across this area. In 1901 Vollrath sold the "Villa Trautheim"; in 1905 also the "Villa Irene". Until the 1920s, the owner of the villa and the tenant of the restaurant changed in quick succession. In 1935 the villa became family property. In 1945 the villa was confiscated by American occupation troops for a short time. The villa was last traded as “Café Trautheim”; from January 2019 the restaurant will open under new management.
