The Villa Volta is a Mad House , which was built in 1996 in the Dutch theme park De Efteling . Villa Volta is the world's first modern Mad House .

History of origin

The attraction, which cost around 4.5 million euros, was created in collaboration with the Dutch company Vekoma , which implemented the concept of historical witch swings, which have existed since the end of the 19th century, with modern technology.

The then Creative Director Ton van de Ven and his team were responsible for the theming of the attraction . The music for the attraction was composed by Ruud Bos , who had already worked with Efteling for the Carnaval Festival, Fata Morgana and Droomvlucht themed cruises.

Content basis

The attraction tells the story of the aged robber Hugo van de Loonse Duinen , who is cursed by a fairy as punishment for his misdeeds as a member and leader of the robber gang De Bokkerijders . His house has been haunted ever since.

The Bokkenrijders , in German called Bockreiter , actually existed in the 18th century.

Construction of the attraction

The Villa Volta is divided into three parts; the main show and two pre-shows. The story is brought closer to the visitor in the pre-shows. In the first room this is done by means of a radio play in which the villagers can be heard talking about the feared band of robbers. In the second pre-show, visitors meet the main character Hugo personally; he tells them, in the form of an animatronic , how his curse came about.

The actual "drive", which then follows as the last part, takes 2 minutes and 43 seconds. The program lasts around 13 minutes in total.

Trivia

  • In the second pre-show room there is a portrait of Ton van de Ven. It has been hanging there since he retired in 2002
  • In 2010 the entire drive system of the attraction had to be replaced
  • In 2016 the Belgian hardstyle Dj Pat B released a song about the Villa Volta
