The Villa del Priorato di Malta , also known as the Magistral Villa or Villa di Malta for short , on the Aventine at Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta 4 in Rome is one of the two headquarters of the Sovereign Order of Malta . The villa has had extra-territorial status since 1869 . The second headquarters is the Palazzo di Malta , it is located in Via dei Condotti 68. The villa should not be confused with the Villa Malta on the Pincio in Rome.

The magistral villa has several functions. The Order's Embassy to the Italian Republic and the Order's Embassy to the Holy See are on the ground floor . Above are the representation rooms. The rooms of the Grand Priory of Rome and z. B. the chapter house, where every five years the general chapter meets and the grand master and the religious government are elected.

history

The villa was built at the instigation of Cardinal Carlo Rezzonico by Giovanni Battista Piranesi on the site of an older Benedictine monastery that Odo von Cluny had built around 936. However, massive building activity had already taken place here in the 15th to 17th centuries.

At the Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta 4 is also the church of Santa Maria del Priorato , also known as Santa Maria dell'Aventino ( Saint Mary on the Aventine ). In addition to Mary, the order patron John the Baptist and St. Basil venerated in the church.

Trivia

The portal of the villa is one of Rome's tourist attractions because the keyhole offers a picturesque perspective of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica .
