Marie Antoine Henri de Mitry (born September 20, 1857 in Leménil-Mitry , Département Meurthe-et-Moselle , † August 18, 1924 ) was a French cavalry officer, most recently Général de division .

Life

De Mitry entered the Saint-Cyr military school in 1875 and two years later was assigned to the 5 e régiment de chasseurs à cheval as a sous-lieutenant . He was a graduate of the École supérieure de guerre and served temporarily on the General Staff . In 1898 he became chief d'escadrons of the 2 e régiment de spahis algériens and in 1910 colonel and regiment commander of the 29 e régiment de dragons .

When the First World War broke out in 1914, de Mitry initially commanded a cuirassier brigade and was given command of the 6th Cavalry Division on August 27. With this he took part in the battle of the Marne . On September 30, 1914 he took command of the II Cavalry Corps, with which he fought during the Race to the Sea and the First Battle of Flanders . He kept command of this corps until December 1916, when he was the VI. Army Corps took over. With the latter he took part in the Nivelle offensive in 1917 .

On April 17, 1918 de Mitry received the command of the Détachement d'armée du Nord, formed to support the British during the Fourth Battle of Flanders , and on July 6, the newly constituted 9 e Armée , with which he participated in the Second Battle the Marne was involved. From October 23, 1918, he led the 7 e Armée until it was dissolved in February 1919.

De Mitry died in 1924 at the age of 66 and is buried in the Invalides Cathedral.
