Villanueva Saravia

Villanueva Saravia Pinto (born September 16, 1964 in Melo , † August 12, 1998 ) was a Uruguayan politician .

Saravia, son of the farmer Diego Saravia Saravia and the teacher and entrepreneur Luz del Carmen Pinto Giordano, was a great-great-grandson of Aparicio Saravia and a great-grandson of Villanueva Saravia. After his parents separated in 1966, he grew up with his maternal grandparents. His mother committed suicide on November 27, 1975 when he was just eleven years old. Saravia attended the "Escuela Nº 3 Juana de Ibarborou" in Melo from 1971 to 1977 and then switched to the secondary school "Liceo Nº 1". After attending the military school in Minas for a few years from 1980had spent, he took up a law degree, which he did not finish. He began his political activities at the age of 18 when he began to work for the then Intendente of Cerro Largo Juan José Burgos and prepared the candidacy of Juan Carlos Payssé and Cristina Maeso together with him. In 1983 he married Rosario Delgado, from whom he divorced in 1989. From this marriage comes the daughter María Victoria Saravia Delgado, born in 1986. In 1993 his second daughter, Lucía Belén Saravia Malvares, was born.

Saravia was a member of the Partido Nacional and narrowly failed in 1989 when it ran for a seat in the Cámara de Representantes . From 1995 to 1998 he was director of the Cerro Largo department . From 1989 to 1994 he also took on the post of Vice President of the state company OSE (Obras Sanitarias del Estado) and in 1991 was Secretary General of the Movimiento Renovación y Victoria .

He died in 1998 under mysterious circumstances that gave rise to much speculation in the press. Apparently he shot himself in the head, but his father then spoke of murder. Shortly before his death, he had raised allegations of corruption against the former President Luis Alberto Lacalle and also against his father-in-law and successor in the office of Intendente, Serafín Bejérez . A street is named after him in his hometown of Melo.
