The metro project in Vilnius (Lithuanian Vilniaus metropolitenas ) is a planned metro system in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius . Three lines are currently proposed. The aim is to relieve congestion, which increased significantly in the 1990s and 2000s. In 2001, Mayor Artūras Zuokas received the requested international support for a feasibility study for the proposed system. The proposal was approved by the City Council in 2002 as part of the Vilnius City Master Plan. Systra was selected as a partner by the city. Negotiations are currently underway as to whether one can use a subway instead of aTram builds. In the Lithuanian parliament Seimas there is a parliamentary group in support of the Metro idea ( Metro idėjos paramos parlamentinė grupė ), headed by Artūras Skardžius .
