Vincent Lafforgue (born January 20, 1974 ) is a French mathematician.

Life

Lafforgue won the Mathematics Olympiad in 1990 and 1991 (gold medal with maximum points). From 1992 to 1996 he studied at the École normal supérieure , where he was Agrégé préparateur in 1996/97 and 1998/99, was at the Center for Theoretical Physics of the CNRS in Saclay in 1997/98 , and joined in 1998 at the University of Paris-South in Orsay, did his doctorate with Jean-Benoît Bost (KK-théorie bivariante pour les algèbres de Banach et conjecture de Baum-Connes). In 2009 he completed his habilitation at the University of Paris VII (Denis Diderot) (Conjecture de Baum-Connes, théorie de Fontaine en caractéristique p, et program de Langlands géométrique). From 1999 he was Chargé de Recherches of the CNRS at the Institut de Mathématiques de Jussieu of the Universities of Paris 6 and 7. From 2010 he was Research Director of the CNRS at the University of Orléans .

He achieved important results in the K-theory of operator algebras : in his dissertation he proved the Baum- Connes conjecture for special groups and thus achieved a breakthrough with regard to this conjecture, which plays a central role in non-commutative geometry. In 2000 he received the EMS Prize and the Prix Peccot, and in 2014 the Prix Servant . In 2002 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing (Banach-KK-Theory and the Baum-Connes conjecture). In 2018 he is plenary speaker at the ICM in Rio ( Shtukas for reductive groups and Langlands correspondence for function fields ).

His brother is the mathematician (Fields Medal winner) Laurent Lafforgue .
