Vincenzo Cartari (* 1531? In Reggio nell'Emilia ; † 1569) is an Italian mythographer and diplomat of the Renaissance .

Cartari was Jean Seznec According probably a protégé of the Dukes of Ferrara . In his work Imagini colla sposizione degli dei degli antichi ("Images depicting the gods of the ancients") from 1556 he mentions Lilio Gregorio Giraldi's work De deis gentium varia et multiplex historia , which was published in 1548, as one of his sources . Despite the success of this predecessor, Cartari's work also became popular due to its vivid woodcut depictions of the ancient gods, believed to have come from a certain Bolognino Zaltieri . It puts the emphasis on iconographyof the gods and explains their clothing, attitudes and attributes. Giovanni Paolo Lomazzo was to use this work for his part. The antiquarian and philologist Lorenzo Pignoria added notes and additions to the work in the editions from 1615 and, notably, a second part with images of the Indian gods ( Seconda Parte delle Imagini de gli Dei Indiani ), a short series of images of Mexican and Japanese deities. In his Teutsche Academie, Joachim von Sandrart refers to Cartari's work, which he published in 1680 in a translation that, surprisingly, has been provided with new illustrations.
