Vincenzo Florio (entrepreneur, 1883)
Vincenzo Florio (born March 18, 1883 in Palermo , † January 6, 1959 in Épernay ) was an Italian entrepreneur and racing car driver .
Life
Florio came from a family who had come to Sicily from Calabria around 1800 and founded several companies there, including the Florio shipping company . The architect Ernesto Basile built the Villino Florio for him between 1899 and 1902 in Palermo . His two passions were luxury yachts and automobiles . After taking part in several car races in Italy and France - including u. a. the 1906 French Grand Prix , he organized the Targa Florio in 1906 , a long-distance race that was regularly held in Sicily and soon became one of the most important motor sport events. In 1913 he founded the Automobile Club di Sicilia . In the same year, Florio joined the Turin-based automaker Officine Meccaniche Beccaria , but was unsuccessful. During the First World War he patented an all-terrain truck for transporting ammunition in the mountains. In the following decades he continued to look after his companies and the direction of Targa Florio .
In 1909, Florio married Princess Annina Alliata di Montereale. His second wife was the French Lucie Henry from Épernay.
