Vinzenz Marschall (born November 13, 1889 in Torkenweiler, a residential area of Eschach (which is now a district of Ravensburg ); † February 25, 1959 in Bregenz ) was a German painter and draftsman . He was also active in other areas of the visual arts such as etching and woodcut .

Life

The son of a farmer trained as a painter and gilder. He did not attend an art academy, although he later described himself as a painter. Like his older brother Josef (1887–1917), he first worked for the Dorn'sche Buchhandlung of the Karl Alber publishing house and created book illustrations and templates for postcards, mainly with motifs from southern Germany. During the First World War , the Marschall brothers fought on the Western Front; They recorded their experiences in drawings and sketches. T. are kept in the Ravensburg city archive. Josef Marschall fell in October 1917, while Vincent returned alive. In 1921 he married Maria Schmidinger. She came from Schwarzenberg in the Bregenz Forest. The marriage produced a son.

After several years working at Alber, Vinzenz Marschall became a freelance artist. He did commissioned work such as album sheets, targets , labels, etc. He also created etchings and woodcuts. A recurring motif was the city of Ravensburg. The Art Deco windows designed by Vinzenz Alber in the beer hall at Rossstrasse 3 in Ravensburg are signed “Vincenz Marschall” and dated “1925”.

In the later years of his life, Vinzenz Marschall lived with his wife in the Ravensburger "Rebhäuschen" and took care of the urban vineyard. In 1958 the couple moved to their son in Bregenz, where Vinzenz Marschall soon died.

In addition to the works from the time of the war, there are also other drawings by Vinzenz Marschall, as well as works by his brother, in the Ravensburg City Archives.

In the 1990s, an exhibition with works by the Marschall brothers took place in Ravensburg. A catalog has not been published.
