history

In 1823 a state free school for boys and girls was founded at 20 Buchtstrasse. In 1836, the classicistic , two-storey, plastered and now eaves-facing school building with a classroom and the teacher's apartment was built according to plans by the Bremen building director Friedrich Moritz Stamm . The Schmalhausen School , so-called after the headmaster, was initially housed here. In 1848 it had 85 students and the number increased, so that rooms in the neighborhood were rented. A conversion with an extension for three classes was therefore carried out in 1853 according to plans by Alexander Schröder. The simply designed school building stands out due to its harmonious proportions. The facade was a fighter - and a window sill cornice divided into three parts.

In 1877 this free school was closed. The house was now alternative quarters for other schools. From 1889 to 1900 the house was used as an auxiliary school and from 1901 to 1918 for the agricultural winter school . Since 1918/19 it was converted into a residential building. In 1983/84 the house was renovated according to plans by Peter Schnorrenberger and the inside was rebuilt.

The building was originally free on one side. It was impaired in its overall effect by the new building at Violenstrasse No. 15-17 built in 1978. In 2014, the Bremen business office as well as legal practices and service providers were located in the house .

The Violenstrasse was named after the plant genus violets (Viola).
