Rudolf Stein (born May 29, 1899 in Leipzig , † August 14, 1978 in Bremen ) was a German monument conservator and architect .

biography

Stein attended the Ratsfreischule and learned the mason trade at the Alwin Neumann company in Leipzig- Gohlis . He graduated from the municipal trade school, the state building school and the University of Fine Arts in Leipzig . In 1922 Stein was admitted to the State Art Academy in Dresden and a member of the Corps Lusatia Dresden in the Rudolstadt Seniors' Convent . He also attended the Technical University of Dresden and then, in addition to his professional activity, the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University . There he studied art history, classical archeology, prehistory and philosophy, took in Berlin in 1930, the Baccalaureate gradually in 1931 to Dr. phil. PhD.

In 1920, Stein took over the construction work for the reconstruction of Gawaiten (East Prussia). In 1926 he became a city architect, in 1936 a municipal building officer and also a curator in Breslau . From 1941 Stein's design for the new town hall in Breslau was to be implemented, but this was not realized because of the war. After the Second World War , the war-damaged cathedral and St. Severi Church were repaired under Stein as master builder in Erfurt . In 1951 he moved to Hanover and took part in the restoration of the old town hall .

In 1952 Stein succeeded Gustav Ulrich as director of the municipal office for the preservation of monuments in Bremen . He campaigned for the restoration of the Stadtwaage in Langenstrasse and the commercial building at Ansgarikirchhof . After Stein left the company in 1964, Karl Dillschneider was his successor. The Leibnizhaus in Hanover was reconstructed based on his 1: 1 drawing .

Stein was a member of the Historical Commission for Silesia . He was the father of the Constance constitutional lawyer Ekkehart Stein and the father-in-law of the Berlin artist Reiner Schwarz .
