Violent Thing (German about "Bad thing") is an English-language pop song written by Borislaw Milanow's team . It will be interpreted by Ben Dolic and should represent Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

background

Dolic was selected as a representative of Germany by several juries from 600 artists in December 2019. After the bad results at the Eurovision Song Contest in recent years, the lead NDR decided to select the contribution internally. On February 27th, the corresponding song was presented as part of the television program “ Our Song for Rotterdam ”.

Music and lyrics

The music was composed by Borislaw Milanow together with Jimmy Thorén, Connor Martin, Peter St. James and Dag Lundberg. The latter also wrote the text. The performer describes the song as a "pop funky song that talks about a strong love". Milanow explains that the song is about a love that cannot be explained. This affection is “violent” (roughly “brutal”) because you cannot defend yourself against it and lose control.

“Most people are just mind people and they always want everything to be explained, everything always has to be logical and well thought out. And that kind of love is just not like that. And that is the "Violent Thing". "

- Borislav Milanov

Music video

The music video was shot at Club Terminal 1 in Sofia , directed by Ivan Moskow . It shows Dolic, who notices a woman who he then looks for in the club and kisses.

reception

Nino de Angelo described the title as a disaster. Nicole considered that the voice for another song would be more ideal. She believes "that this song does not have the potential to convince Europe in three minutes."

Fan blogs saw the title selected for Germany as a significant step forward compared to the failures in previous years. Wiwbloggs rated the song with 8.18 points, the best value of the Eurovision contributions of 2020. Violent Thing is exactly what you want to hear after the disappointing German contribution from last year. The title is well suited for the radio, but can also be played in the club. The Eurovisionary blog is of the opinion that a good choreography would have made a high ranking at the ESC possible. According to ESCXtra, it is not the best German contribution, but the one that is most suitable for the radio and the music charts. The German-language blog ESC Kompakt ruled that “everything was finally done right”. Song, video and performance are "coordinated".

publication

The music video including the title as a digital download was published at the end of February 2020. In order to comply with the EBU regulations, a version shortened by 15 seconds was published on April 24th.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

As part of the so-called “Big Five”, Germany would have qualified directly for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest, which should take place on May 16, 2020. The choreography was to be developed by Marty Kudelka. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.
