Virgil Săhleanu

Virgil Săhleanu (born January 9, 1946 in Cacica , † September 7, 2000 ) was a Romanian metal worker and union activist of the Confederatia Națională Sindicală - Cartel Alfa (CNS-Cartel Alfa) in the northern Romanian city of Iași . On September 7, 2000, he was murdered.

Virgil Săhleanu was born on January 9, 1946 in Cacica , Suceava County . He was a member of the executive office of the CNS-Cartel Alfa union in Iasi, married and the father of three children.

Background of murder

Săhleanu was a staunch opponent of the privatization of the Tepro Istat steel factory in Iași, which the company management was aiming for. Since 1999, with the support of his colleagues, he has been negotiating with the company management to keep the 1200 jobs. Resistance to privatization took place at the corporate, public and legal levels. This was also discussed at the European Court of Justice in Strasbourg. The murder

After repeated large-scale demonstrations against privatization and the associated threat of unemployment, Virgil Săhleanu was stabbed to death by Ioan Tofan and Claudiu Bahna on September 7, 2000 in front of his apartment. The client of the act was the former director of Tepro Victor Bălan and the head of the security service paza Protect Vaslui, Cătălin Ciubotaru.

Convictions

For their involvement in the murder were convicted in June 2005:

  • as perpetrators: Ioan Tofan and Claudiu Bahna, each imprisoned for 23 years
  • as client: Victor Bălan to 15 years imprisonment
  • as client: Cătălin Ciubotaru to 17 years imprisonment
  • as accomplices: Valentin Blanita and Gelu Alexandru Spuma (employees at Paza Protect Vaslui), each imprisoned for 5 years
  • as the backing man the client: František Příplata, the investor from the Czech Republic, to 8 years imprisonment. Before starting his sentence on September 1, 2005, he managed to escape to his home country at the end of July.

The company union of Tepro Istat in Iași today bears the name Virgil Săhleanu.
