Virginia Symphony Orchestra

The Virginia Symphony Orchestra is an American symphony orchestra from the Hampton Roads metropolitan area in Virginia .

The orchestra performs primarily at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk , the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach , the Ferguson Center for the Arts in Newport News , the Phi Beta Kappa Hall at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg and at the Regent University in Virginia Beach. The orchestra works with the Virginia Opera and Virginia Arts Festival as well as school districts in the region.

The Norfolk Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1920, was the only such orchestra between Baltimore and Atlanta at the time . During the recession of the 1970s, the orchestra was merged with the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra and the Virginia Beach Pops Symphony to form the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in 1979 .

Music directors

In May 1991, JoAnn Falletta , a woman, was appointed for the first time as the orchestra's eleventh music director . Karen Philion is the President and Executive Director .
