The Viridasiidae are a spider family from the order of the web spiders . They are endemic to Madagascar and the Comoros .
features
The Viridasiidae have long been classified among the comb spiders . However, they differ from these and the other families of the superfamily Lycosoidea by various features. An important distinguishing feature is the construction of Fußendglieder ( Tarsus ), the only two in contrast to the lycosoidea claw wear. This has an impact on the behavior and the acquisition of food of the Viridasiidae, since the bristled central claw responsible for the safe grasping and guiding of the silk thread in the other spiders is missing. Instead, the Viridasiidae have tufts of sets on the tarsi , which allow them to climb better through adhesive forces. There are also two pairs of thorns on the underside of the metatarsi. There are also differences to the comb spiders in terms of reproduction. After mating , the females create several egg cocoons , which are pendulum-shaped and hung on a suitable surface with a thread. To protect them from predators and parasites, the female also provides the cocoons with elements of the soil substrate to camouflage them.
Systematics
The Viradiisidae were separated from the other comb spiders (Ctenidae) as early as 1967 by Lehtinen as a subfamily. In 2015 this subfamily was created with two genera by Daniele Polotow et al. raised to the family. The Viridasiidae probably belong to the group of Dionycha , whose position within the spider system has not yet been clarified.
