Viscount Barrington , of Ardglass in the County of Down , was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on July 1, 1720 by King George I for John Barrington from the English lawyers and MPs . Along with the Viscount title he was given the subordinate title Baron Barrington , of Newcastle in the County of Limerick.

His great-grandson, the 7th Viscount, was also awarded the title of Baron Shute , of Becket in the County of Berkshire, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom on April 17, 1880 , with the special addition that he had no male offspring of his own to his brother Percy Barrington and his male descendants. Since the 7th Viscount remained childless, his brother inherited all three titles as the 8th Viscount.

The titles finally expired when his great-grandson, the 11th Viscount, died childless on April 6, 1990.
