Ardglass ( Irish : Ard Ghlais "green height") is a place on the north-east coast of Ireland in the historic County Down in Northern Ireland . The place belonged to the dissolved District Down and since 2015 belongs to the District Newry, Morne and Down .

The place

Ardglass is a coastal town and fishing port on the Lecale Peninsula on the Irish Sea , about 9 km (5½ miles) southeast of Downpatrick on the A2 ( major road ).

In the 2011 Census , Ardglass had a population of 1643 people (making the place officially a village ). Of these, 89.0% were Roman Catholics, while 6.4% had any other Christian background. Between 1991 and 2011, the population hardly changed. Administratively, Ardglass is part of District Down .

In addition to its more than 2000 year old importance as a tidal fishing port with two piers and a marina today, Ardglass is also home to a large number of commuters to Downpatrick and Belfast . The fish trade makes up to £ 5 million a year.

Ardglass was connected to rail traffic from 1892 to 1950.

At the time when Ardglass in the 15th century the busiest berth (Engl. Port ) in Ulster figured remember today four medieval tower houses , including the meaningful Jordan's Castle .

To preserve the streetscape from the early 19th century, a conservation area was marked in 1996 , which contains eight archaeologically relevant properties, along with two others nearby.

About 8.4 km southwest is the church at St. John's Point .
