Baron Carleton is a hereditary British title of nobility conferred once in the Peerage of England , twice in the Peerage of Great Britain and once in the Peerage of Ireland .

Awarding and other titles

In the first bestowal , the title Baron Carleton , of Imbercourt in the County of Surrey , was created on May 22, 1626 in the Peerage of England for the diplomat and Member of the House of Commons Sir Dudley Carleton . On July 25, 1628, he was raised to Viscount Dorchester , also in the Peerage of England . Since he left no descendants, both titles lapsed on his death on February 15, 1632.

In the second bestowal on October 19, 1714 in the Peerage of Great Britain, the title Baron Carleton , of Carleton in the County of York , was created for the politician and civil servant Henry Boyle . The title expired on his death on March 31, 1725.

In the third award on August 6, 1786 in the Peerage of Great Britain, the title Baron Carleton , of Carleton in the County of York , was newly created for Richard Boyle, 2nd Earl of Shannon . He was a maternal cousin of the Baron's second bestowal. Already in 1764 he inherited the title Earl of Shannon from his father, which was awarded to him in 1756 in the Peerage of Ireland, along with the subordinate titles Viscount Boyle and Baron Castle Martyr . The Barony of Carleton has since been a subordinate title of the respective earl.

Parallel to the third award, the fourth award was given on September 17, 1789 in the Peerage of Ireland, the title of Baron Carleton , of Amner in the County of Tipperary , to the Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas Hugh Carleton . On November 21, 1797 he was also raised in the Peerage of Ireland to Viscount Carleton , of Clare in the County of Tipperary. Both titles expired on his childless death on February 25, 1826.
