Earl Macartney

Earl (of) Macartney , in the County of Antrim , was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

The Earl's family seat was Lissanoure Castle near Loughguile in County Antrim .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on March 1, 1794 for the diplomat George Macartney, 1st Baron Macartney . He had led the Macartney mission to China in 1793 .

As early as July 19, 1792, he was given the subordinate title Viscount Macartney , of Dervock in the County of Antrim, and on July 19, 1776 the subordinate title Baron Macartney , of Lissanoure in the County of Antrim. Both titles were also part of the Peerage of Ireland.

On June 8, 1795 he was also raised in the Peerage of Great Britain to Baron Macartney , of Parkhurst in the County of Surry and of Auchinleck in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright . This title, unlike its Irish titles, was associated with a hereditary seat in the British House of Lords .

Since the 1st Earl had no children, the titles expired on his death on May 31, 1806.
